Everyday we make use of the computer, some of us do not even know the mechanism behind the computer system so far we are able to work, have fun and get information with it, nothing seems to matter anymore.
If you have ever attended a computer class before, after the definition of a computer, the teacher will tell you that the computer uses two components for its function, and its simply “the harware and the software”. Without the software, the hardwares in your computer is just useless, the software starts from the operating system, on it, you install all of your applications on the operating system.
The aim of this article is to enlighten readers on the categories and types of operating system that is available. As time goes by, we may discuss into details the feature that make each OS unique in its use.
DEFINITION
An operating system, or OS, is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer would be useless.
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
As computers progressed and develop from the first generation, so also is the operating systems. Below are categories of operating systems with examples.
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE (GUI): A GUI operating system cantains graphics and icons, it is commonly navigated with a mouse. Some examples include; System 7.x, Windows 98, Windows CE.
MULTI-USER: The multi-user operating system allows multiple users to use thesame computer at a time and different times. Its example includes; Linux, Unix and Windows 2000
MULTIPROCESSING: This operating system is capable of supporting and utilizing more than one computer processor. E. g, Linux, Unix and Windows 2000
MULTITASKING: This operating system is capable of running multiple software processes at the same time. Example includes, Unix and Windows 2000
MULTITHREADING: The operating system that allows different sections of a software program to run concurently. E.g, Linux, Unix and Windows 2000.
